The Thief Lord was written by Cornelia Funke. It was first published in German. It became such a huge hit in Europe that it was translated into other languages for us all to enjoy.
This story first opens with Aunt Ester searching for one of her two missing, orphaned, nephews. She correctly believes they have run away to the magical land of Venice, Italy. Aunt Ester has hired the private detective, Victor Getz, to help her. She is only interested in raising her nephew Bo, but Bo’s brother, Prosper, knows Bo wouldn’t like living with Aunt Ester, so they both run away.
While in Venice they meet other orphans living in an abandoned movie theatre. The orphans are looked after by the mysterious Thief Lord. The Thief Lord provides them with treasures to sell for their livelihood. But the Thief Lord isn't really who he claims to be.
Throughout the story the private detective, Victor, is trying to find the boys, but along the way becomes their ally, as they try to survive on the streets. The Thief Lord has been given a special mission to find the missing wing of the magical merry-go-round. All fo these stories encompass Bo and Prosper and their quest to avoid Aunt Ester.
I give this book 4 out of 5 book worms.

Since I started sharing this book this week, already, I am finding some students really love this book and others would give it 2 bookworms. I'm curious to hear more comments. --Ms. Gentile
